Wine
Plantagenet Icon Lionel Samson Cabernet Sauvignon is named after pioneer Lionel Samson. The family business he started in 1829 – now the oldest in Western Australia – today owns Plantagenet.
The fruit is sourced from the Wyjup Vineyard at Mount Barker in the Great Southern wine region. The vines were first planted in 1971.
The grapes are destemmed and crushed into small open fermenters, then inoculated with a cultured yeast strain. During fermentation, the juice sees regular plunging and occasional pump overs with aeration.
Once the ferment is complete, the wine spends up to four weeks further on skins before being gently pressed to new and seasoned French oak to age.
Each barrel is racked three times during 18 months of maturation. Finally the wine is blended, filtered and bottled.
Deep ruby, Plantagenet Icon Lionel Samson Cabernet Sauvignon has brambly dark fruit flavours, savoury Old World character and mineral complexity. Cellaring potential is 25 years.
